With social media and digital platforms exponentially gaining recognition throughout the world, it massively impacts political advocacy by allowing individuals and others to spread awareness in their campaign or organization. Due to the extent of social media, political promotion can be spread around the world with little to no resources. The message being sent can transcend geographical borders, engaging with any audience it wishes.

Although social media and different digital platforms can raise awareness and gain attraction around the globe, massive amounts of misinformation for certain candidates and social media personalities can be posted against them. According to the ADL, they stated, “We monitored accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube operated by candidates, political media personalities, and news outlets between October 18 and November 18, 2022. We reported false and misleading non-advertising content to these platforms, and recorded examples of platforms either taking action or declining to do so.” With the influence of social media and digital platforms, it is evident that their influence spreads awareness in political activities, but also spreads misinformation that leads to wrong decisions made by the people. This especially applies for the presidential elections, where misguided votes could be placed and ultimately result in an unwanted leader.

While online platforms and social media enhance access and interaction for political advocacy, they also pose significant challenges. In this digital landscape, it’s crucial for users and platforms to prioritize accuracy and accountability. By focusing on these principles, we can use digital advocacy to foster informed and committed engagement in political spheres and strengthen our electoral systems.
